Wake Tech Math Students Score Big in Regional Competition
Wake Tech students “did the math” and won top honors last weekend at a competition among schools spanning the Southeast. The 20th annual Sophomore Level Mathematics Tournament was held at the University of North Georgia in Gainesville on Saturday, April 5th. Wake Tech dominated the event, winning first place in the team competition as well as the top three awards for the individual calculus test.
Seven North Carolina community colleges competed, along with colleges from Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, and Georgia.
Individual winners were:
1st place: Prem Shah
2nd place: Diwash Thapa
5th place: John Anderson
In the Team Competition:
1st place: Jisub Kim, Nicholas Kleban, and Prem Shah
4th place: John Anderson, Joseph Caswell, Qurat Khan and Sungwoong Lee
Fourteen students from two Wake Tech campuses, all members of the Wake Tech Math Club, participated. From Main Campus: John Anderson, Joseph Caswell, Anta Diouf, Qurat Khan, Sungwoong Lee, Rushi Patel, and Edzer Tessier; sponsored by Beth Tsai and Holly Markovich. From Northern Wake Campus: Devon Harris, Nicholas Kleban, Jisub Kim, Prem Shah, Derrick Sprague, and Diwash Thapa; sponsored by Alison Schubert and Tom Aydlett.
