Seasonal Blood Shortage: Community Blood Center of the Carolinas Calls on the Public to Donate Blood
The Community Blood Center of the Carolinas (CBCC) announced today that the area is currently facing a severe blood shortage, due in large part to cold and flu season which is affecting many regular donors. CBCC is calling on the public to donate as soon as possible, ensuring local patients have the blood needed. While all blood types are asked to give, O type donations are critically low.
“This is already shaping up to be one of the worst flu seasons we’ve had, and with so many regular donors unable to give blood due to illness, we are calling on those in the community who are healthy to step up and make a difference in the lives of local patients,” said John McCain, Chief Operating Officer of the Community Blood Center of the Carolinas. “Our local hospitals use over 400 units of blood every single day, and the need often goes up during winter months when illness leads to an increased number of patients. These patients are counting on the community coming together to support their needs.”
Anyone 16 and older who weighs at least 120 pounds is encouraged to donate at one of the five CBCC centers located in Charlotte, Concord, Gastonia, Greensboro and Hickory, or at one of CBCC's many mobile blood drives. For more information or to make an appointment, call 704-972-4700.
Community organizations and businesses are asked to consider hosting a blood drive and making an even bigger impact. Call Kim Jones at 704-972-4727 for more information, or email KLJones@cbcc.us.
