Kangaroo Express, the leading independently operated convenience store chain in the southeastern United States, operated by The Pantry, Inc. (Nasdaq: PTRY), today announced its first military-themed store, located at 5642 Bragg Boulevard in Fayetteville, North Carolina, received the “Best Original Design” award in the 2014 Convenience Store News’ Store Design Contest.

Convenience Store News is the convenience industry’s leading publication, delivering insight, analysis, market research and business intelligence that helps convenience store retailers stay ahead of what’s next. This is the ninth year of its design contest, honoring convenience retailers who have created the most exciting, innovative and shopper-friendly looks for their stores. Entries are judged on innovation, creativity and the positive impact of the overall design on the business.

“Kangaroo Express’ military-themed store stood out for its originality, and for being a great example of what it means to be a neighborhood convenience store,” said Don Longo, editorial director, Convenience Store News. “The store successfully ties into the community’s deep roots. It’s clear this retailer supports what’s important to them.”

Helped shaped by local military personnel and military families, Kangaroo Express’ military-themed store celebrates the strong Armed Forces community in Fayetteville and Fort Bragg. Kangaroo Express hosted a round table at the USO of North Carolina (USO-NC) Fort Bragg Center to collect input from servicemen and women, their spouses and children, and the store design was developed as a direct result of their feedback.

“Positioned across the street from a major entrance onto U.S. Army military installation Fort Bragg, we saw an opportunity for a new Kangaroo Express that would not only serve the military community, but also embrace and show our appreciation for our troops and their families,” said Gordon Schmidt, senior vice president of operations, Kangaroo Express. “We are honored that the store has been recognized by Convenience Store News for its original design, developed in no small part by the servicemen and women and their families that provided feedback and helped create a store that truly is part of the community.”

Kangaroo Express guests who visit the store can enjoy a fast, friendly and clean environment, as well as a SUBWAY® restaurant and drive-thru, with tributes to our troops incorporated throughout the store design, including:

• Six murals on the side of the store depicting brave military men and women serving our country

• A “Wash Rack” catering to civilian vehicles with automatic wash, foam, rinse and wax options

• A “Cold-Canteen,” always set at 34 degrees Fahrenheit, featuring refreshing, chilled beverages

• A Wall of Honor recognizing local community members and military organizations that are making a difference in the Fayetteville area and around the world through their service

The military-themed store is a prime example of the investments Kangaroo Express is making in its communities across the Southeast, including plans to remodel select locations and open more quick-serve restaurants in stores.
