Michael Best announced today it has opened a new office in Raleigh at the Atrium at Blue Ridge located at 2501 Blue Ridge Road signaling its commitment to the Research Triangle area. Lisa Mueller, chair of Michael Best’s Life Sciences Industry Group, has established a presence in Raleigh and will serve as office managing partner. New attorney hires in Raleigh include partner Jeff Childers and senior counsel James Lawrence in the firm’s Life Sciences Industry Group.

Mueller, a partner in Michael Best’s Intellectual Property Practice Group and the chair of the Life Sciences and Chemical Practice Group, has extensive experience in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, biotechnology and chemistry sectors.

“We’re thrilled to launch our Raleigh office and confident in Lisa’s ability to lead this initiative for the firm,” said David Krutz, Managing Partner of Michael Best. “The region’s robust life science and technology community, in conjunction with the higher education institutions located in the region, will be a great platform from which to build our presence. Lisa’s national and global experience and unique blend of work with life sciences incubators, entrepreneurs and international pharmaceutical companies create a powerful offering that we’re proud to put our name on.”

Mueller is also a member of the Management Committee and the Venture Best™ Practice Group. She is also the author of the award-winning blog, BRIC Wall, which provides unique insights on patent law developments in the life sciences industry in Brazil, Russia, India and China.

Childers brings his background in chemistry to his intellectual property practice and concentrates on counseling clients through various transactional matters and issues including preparing and filing domestic and foreign patent applications, preparing freedom-to-operate and infringement opinions, and providing guidance on management of patent portfolios.

Prior to receiving his J.D., he served as principal scientist at ManTech Environmental Technology, Inc., the environmental arm of the technological service providers to the United States Government. While there he developed innovative instrumental and chemical methods of measuring air pollutants, co-authored several publications and books, and received multiple awards including the President’s Award for Excellence, and the EPA Scientific and Technological Achievement Award.

“Jeff is an established and extremely talented attorney in the life sciences area,” said Mueller. “With almost 20 years of technical experience, coupled with his strong patent subject matter familiarity, I’m confident he will help us create valuable business opportunities and solutions in the marketplace as we leverage our life sciences and tech know-how.”

“The Research Triangle is a unique region with a variety of incredible intellectual establishments at its core,” Childers said. “The firm’s strong national platform and its history of collaborating with technology-focused incubators, startups and emerging companies sets it apart from other law firms and I’m happy to be a part of that.”

Childers earned his J.D., with honors, from the University of North Carolina School of Law, and served as an articles editor for the North Carolina Law Review. He also received his Ph.D. from Duke University and B.S. from West Virginia Wesleyan.
